Do you really have to work 60 hours a week to be successful in your business?

One of my businesses is real estate; an industry known for the 24-7 Johnny/Jane-on-the- spot. This article pertains to real estate agents but it can easily be applied to other businesses.

Real businesses have hours that they are open and closed.  If you’re Mr./Mrs. 24-7, you’re more like a slave than a master to your world.

We call ourselves professionals but don’t act like other professionals. Our offices CAN close.  Our cell phone number CAN be turned off.  What comes to mind when you think about the word professional? Doctor? Lawyer? Banker? What are their schedules like?

Think about 24-7 businesses that need people doing the work.  Wal-Mart, Cops, Drug dealers and prostitution come to mind. Which are you more like?

I think the best thing we can do as agents is set boundaries for ourselves and our clients.

I communicate to my new clients up front what my schedule is while also giving them the priorities I have set in my life.  (Finances are 5th on the list.) I have yet to have a client get mad at me or upset because I told them that we won’t be talking on the phone after 6pm at night. Actually, they are thrilled. Of the few that haven’t hired me, that could have been the reason for them choosing another agent. That’s totally fine. I know that my schedule and the way I run my business makes me unique and gets me more referrals than most agents.  It’s a lot easier than you think.  Feel free to contact me if you want to learn more.

Don’t let fear run your life.  Fear of losing a client, fear of missing a call, etc. Scarcity adds value.  Be the diamond not the lump of coal.

What do you think?  Does being 24/7 or always available really add that much to your bottom line?  Is your life better or worse because of it? Let’s talk about it.
